Now that you've chosen a Squarespace plan and template, it's time to start customizing the site to your needs. But before you jump into any customizations on your new site's design, it's important to build a foundation through adding pages and setting up your navigation. This post is part 3 in my new Friday blog post series on Squarespace. When you log into your Squarespace site, you'll land on a page that looks similar to the image below.

Last week we discussed the Settings section, but this week we're jumping over to Pages. The Main Navigation includes all of the visible pages that are featured in the navigation bar at the top of your site. You'll notice that the order that my pages are listed in the left-hand column mimics the order that they're listed across the top of my site. If you would like to switch the order of your pages, you can simply drag and drop the pages into the order that you would prefer. For example, I didn't want to include my Archives page in my Main Navigation or my Footer Navigation, but I wanted to be able to link to it in my blog sidebar.

I set it up as an unlinked page and it's hidden from sight until a visitor clicks on its direct link. Tip: I always suggest that my clients use no more than 6 items in their main navigation; it's simpler, less overwhelming for your visitors, and it helps organize the information on your site.

If you need to include more pages in your navigation, consider using folders to house some of them. Simply drag and drop your pages underneath a folder in your left-hand panel and it will create a drop-down menu for you in your main navigation. A screen will pop up asking you which type of page you would like to create. A cover page allows you to present information on a single bold page and make a powerful introduction to your site.

Album pages allow you to upload music and allow visitors to listen to your tracks. Instead it connects to another website or page within your own site. The Branding and Library options you see in my main navigation are both folders that house individual pages. This is especially helpful for photographers, designers, and artists. It's useful if you have multiple galleries or projects. Once you create a new page, you can go into the page settings by hovering over the page in your navigation and clicking on the gear icon that appears on the right-hand side.Squarespace offers users several excellent tools for organizing information and developing a navigational structure.

These elements control how visitors to your site view your information. Both folders and index pages have specific functions within your design. Many Squarespace templates utilize both of these organizational features making it simple to create an easy to navigate and highly useful website.

Folders are available in all templates. Index pages are available in some templates. While both can be used in your design in some templates each needs to stand alone.

Now that you have a basic understanding of the functions of Index Pages and folders let's compare the two and look at the best way to use them in your Squarespace website design. Most Squarespace websites use folders for creating drop-down menus in the main navigation of a website.

Folders are how related pages are grouped to give visitors quick access to relevant pages on your site. Unlike Index Pages, they are strictly an organizational tool and do not create new pages on your site. The styles of folders vary depending on the template. Some templates allow you to customize style options to set a menu's background color, choose if it displays an icon and uses different colors for fonts for sub-pages. The functionality of folders also varies by the template.

In most Squarespace templates, folders used in the main navigation open a drop-down menu on hover rolling over the navigation name with your cursor. In some templates, clicking on the folders name takes you to the first page in the folder. In other templates, clicking the folder opens the drop-down menu.

Creating and using folders is easy. You can also drag existing pages into your folder. Adding existing pages to your folder is as simple as dragging and dropping them into the folder. You can add any page to a folder, except index pages. Any pages you add to your folder appear as drop-down menu items.

To see how your folder appears, click the "hide" arrow for a full preview. Each template displays folders differently. In most templates, the folder's links appear when you hover over the folder link. Clicking the folder title does not open the first page. The menu is collapsed on mobile and expands when tapped. Note: If you delete a folder, all underlying pages are also deleted.
